Expectations for Independent Study

What you can expect in the Independent Study program:

  1. You will be required to complete more reading and written assignments than you have had in the regular programs at your home school.
  2. Plan to spend 25-30 hours per week on serious school work.
  3. You must write legibly (i.e., your work must be well-organized, easy to read, and easy to understand).  Spend extra time practicing your handwriting.  Proofread and rewrite your writing assignments as necessary.
  4. You will be assigned virtually the same coursework you would have received at your home school.
  5. In most academic areas, you will be given tests frequently to check for your levels of learning and understanding of the subject matter.
  6. Your grades will reflect your efforts in attendance, homework, completion of assignments, and performance on tests.

Independent Study Expectations of You:

  1. Successfully complete up to twenty (20) credits per school quarter (10 credits, min.).

  2. Complete weekly assignments and turn it in on time.

  3. You must follow the Independent Study classroom rules and leave campus immediately after your scheduled appointment.

  4. Be on time for your  appointments; stay for the full amount of time you are scheduled.

  5. Notify your teacher if you cannot be on time for your scheduled appointment.

  6. If you are ill, or if there is an emergency of some sort, promptly reschedule your appointment with your teacher.

Suggestions:

  1. Provide yourself with a suitable environment in which you can successfully study and complete your assignments (i.e., work in an area that is well-lit and quiet, with no distractions).  You must get your family and friends to help you accomplish this goal!

  2. Prepare daily and weekly schedules that set aside quality time so you can complete your assignments accurately and on time.

  3. In the Independent Study program, you must be able to work independently at home, with little assistance.  However, from time to time, you may have to get help from a family member or other person.  Remember, call your teacher when you have difficulty, or when you require some kind of assistance.

  4. Prepare in advance for tests because they are an important part of your grade.
